Botanical Description: A deciduous wiry climber with tough branches; leaves abruptly pinnate with many pairs of leaflets, the rachis ending in spine, the leaflets are oblong , round at both ends, thinly membranous, flowers are pink clustered on tubercles arranged along the rachis of one sided pedunculate receme. Fruits pods, turgid with a sharp deflexed beak, seeds usually scarlet with a black spot or sometimes pure white, black. Flowering and fruiting from August to April.

They are found throughout India, on hedges and bushes in exposed areas

  • Vipaka : Katu
  • Karma : Kesya, Vranapaha, Vatapittajvarapaha, Kandughna, Garbhanirodhaka

Traditional uses: The seeds are acrid, bitter, astringent, toxic, abortificacient, aphrodisiac and trichogenous

Modern Pharmacological Action: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic
