Amorphophallus campanulatus Roxb.

Botanical Description:  A stout herbaceous plant with underground hemispherical depressed dark brown corm, leaves compound, large, solitary, petiole stout, mottled, 60-90cm long, leaflets 5-12.5 cm long of variable width, obovate or oblong acute strongly and many nerved; male and female infloroscences contiguous, neuters absent, appendage of spadix subglobose or amorphous, equalling or longer than the fertile region, spathe campanulate, pointed strongly closely veinedgreenish, pink externally, the base within is purple, margins recurved, undulate and xrisped, male infloroscencesubturbinate; female 7.5cm or more long; fruits obovoid 2-3 seeded red berries. Flowering and fruiting is from April to June.

Modern Pharmacological Action: The tubers are anti inflammatory, liver tonic, anodyne, anti haemorrhoidal, expectorant, stomachic, digestive, appetizer, carminative, aphrodisiac, anthelmintic, emmenagogue, haemostatic, rejuvenating and tonic. They are traditionally used in elephantiasis, tumors, arthralgia, inflammations, hemorrhages, hemorrhoids, vomiting, asthma, cough, bronchitis, anorexia, colic, dyspepsia, flatulence, constipation, hepatopathy, splenopathy, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhoea, seminal weakness, fatigue, anemia and general debility. The tuber is reported to have CNS depressant.cytotoxic activity and antiprotease activity3-6, analgesic activity7 and cytotoxic activity.
