Asparagus racemosus Willd.

Botanical Description:  An armed climbing under shrub with woody terete stems and recurved or rarely straight spines, young stems very delicate, brittle and smooth, leaves reduced to minute chaffy scales spines; cladodes triquetrous, curved in tufts or 2-6 flowers, white fragrant, in simple branched racemes on the naked nodes of the main shoots or in the axils of the thorns; fruits globular or obscurely 3 lobed pulpy berries, purplish when ripe, seeds with hard and brittle testa. Flowering and fruiting from January to May.

Modern Pharmacological Action: The powdered dried root of A. racemosus is used in Ayurveda for dyspepsia. A. racemosus has also been used for the treatment of ulcerative disorders of stomach and for the duodenal ulcer diseases. The root extract of A. racemosus is prescribed in Ayurveda to increase milk secretion during lactation. In Ayurveda, A. racemosus has been described as absolutely safe for long term use, even during pregnancy and lactation. Systemic administration of higher doses of all the extracts did not produce any abnormality in behaviour pattern of mice and rat.
