Botanical Description1:  A biennial or annual small herb. Leaves pinnately dissected, leaflets leaflets linear. Flowers white, in umbels. Fruits are schizocarp, oblong oval, aromatic. Flowering and fruiting from December to April.

It occurs in Iran, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh etc.

Modern Pharmacological Action: Caraway products (oils as well as their aqueous and solvent derived extracts) have shown significant antioxidant activity. A caraway root extract has also shown significant anti-DPPH radical activity. Numerous investigations have revealed a potential antimicrobial activity of caraway products (oils as well as their aqueous and solvent derived extracts). The antidiabetic effects of caraway products are amply documented apart from which they are diuretic, immunomodulatory, anti-osteoporotic, gastrointestinal etc.
