Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.)Schult

Botanical Description:  A large woody much branched climber with pubescent young parts; leaves simple, opposite, elliptic, or ovate, more or less pubescent on both sides, base round or cordate; flowers small, yellow in umbellate cymes, fruits slender, follicles upto 7.5 cm long. Flowering & fruiting from August to January.

It is found Throughout India.

Ayurvedic Properties and Uses:

  • Rasa : Tikta, Kasaya
  • Guna : Laghu, Ruksa
  • Virya : Usna
  • Vipaka : Katu
  • Karma : Caksusya, Dipana, Kaphahara, Vatahara, Visaghna, Sramasana

Modern Pharmacological Action: Gymnema was shown in one study to possess antimicrobial action against Bacillis pumilis, B. subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus but not against E.coli and Proteus vulgaris. Gymnema has been reported to possess a sweet taste-suppressing effect, attributed to the peptide gurmarin.
