Litsea chinensis Lam.

Botanical Description: A small tree. Leaves compound paripinnate, leaflets opposite, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate. Flowers greenish white, in terminal axillary panicles. Fruit globose berry. Flowering and fruiting from Febuary to June.

It is cultivated in gardens and farms.

Ayurvedic Properties and Uses:

  • Rasa : Katu, Tikta, Kasaya
  • Guna : Laghu, Snigdha
  • Virya : Usna
  • Vipaka : Katu
  • Karma : Dipana, Kaphahara, Stambhana, Vatahara, Bhagnaprasadhaka.

Modern Pharmacological Action: Litsea glutinosa bark extract has showed the presence of alkaloids in Aqueous extract, Ethanolic exract, and Petroleum ether extract. Petroleum ether extract, Ethanolic extract, aqueous extract of Litsea glutinosa has showed the antibacterial activity. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has showed more activity in the Petroleum ether extract & Ethanolic extract, least activity in aqueous extract. Aspergillus fumigatus has showed the more activity against Petroleum ether extract, less activity in Ethanolic extract and poor activity in aqueous extract.
