Botanical Description:  The vegetative body of the lichen (thallus) is flat, growing in rosettes or irregularly spreading over the substratum giving the appearance of a flower-hence the name stone flower. It is mainly composed of fungal mycelia which form a network enclosing algal cells or gonidia. Reproduction is by means of spored or soredia which are dispersed by wind, water or insects. When deposited on suitable substrata they develop into new lichen thalli. No flowering.

Modern Pharmacological Action: P. perlata contain acidic substance that has been used as an antibiotic as a topical antibacterial agent for human skin diseases. Lichen metabolites exert a wide variety of biological actions including antibiotic, antimycobacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects
