Botanical Description:  It is a prostrate or twining perennial herb.

It is found wild, but also occasionally cultivated throughout the country as a forage crop.

Ayurvedic Properties and Uses:

  • Rasa : Madhura, Tikta
  • Guna : Laghu, Ruksa
  • Virya : Sita
  • Vipaka : Madhura
  • Karma : Pittahara, Sukrala, Caksusya, Kaphahara, Rasayana, Visaghna, Sukradosahara, Garbhasthapana

Modern Pharmacological Action: : It is used in the treatment of jaundice and other liver disorders. The leaves are considered as sedative, coolant, antibilious, tonic, cataplasms for weak eyes. It is also used in irregular fever in the form of decoction and also recommended in haemorrhoids and snake bite. Fruit is cooling, dry, bitter, with a flavor, aphrodisiac, astringent, styptic, anthelmintic and good for eyes. Its consumption cures inflammation, fever, burning sensation, thirst, piles, dysentery, cough, gout, biliousness. Fruit is also recommended in snake- bite, scorpion- sting, gout and tuberculosis.
