Botanical Description:  A slender aromatic climber, rooting at the nodes, branches erect, subscandent, swollen at the nodes; leaves alternate, lower ones broadly ovate, cordate, upper ones oblong, pval, all entire, smooth, thin with reticulate venation, veins raised beneath; flowers in solitary spikes, fruits berries, small red when ripe, cpmpletely sunk in solid fleshy spike. Flowering and fruiting from August to April.

It is found throughout India.

  • Rasa : Madhura, Katu, Tikta
  • Guna : Laghu, Snigdha
  • Virya : Anusna
  • Vipaka : Madhura
  • Karma : Dipana, Hrdya, Kaphahara, Rucya, Tridosahara, Vatahara, Vrsya,Rasayana, Recana.

Modern Pharmacological Action: The fruits and roots of long pepper are used as snuff in comma androwsiness, as sedative in insomnia and epilepsy, as cholagogue in obstruction of bile duct and gall-bladder, as emmenagogue, abortification and as antihelmintic. It is very effective in the treatment of bronchial asthma in children. The fruits extract of the plant had antidepressant, antinociceptive, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, antiallergic, antiasthmatic, antitubercu-lar, antifertility, antiulcer, antihypertensive, antiplatelet, antithyroid, imminomodulatory, antiamoebic, hepato- protective, vasodilating, insecticidal and mosquito larvicidal activities.
