Botanical Description: A stout glabrous climbing perrenial rooting at the nodes; leaves simple, alternate, very variable in breadth, 5-9 nerved. Flowers minute in spikes, usually dioecios, fruiting spikes very variable in length, fruits ovoid or globose, one seeded berries, bright red when ripe, seeds globose, testa thin, perisperm hard and white. Flowering and fruiting from August to April.

It is found throughout India.

  • Vipaka : Katu
  • Karma : Slesmahara, Dipana, Medohara, Pittakara, Rucya, Kaphavatajit, Vatahara, Chedana,
                Jantunasana, Chedi, Hrdroga, Vataroga.

Modern Pharmacological Action:  The essential oil of the fruits showed insecticidal and insect-repellant activity. The essential oil also showed fungicidal activity and antiamoebic activity, apart from which they also have effect on the respiratory system and possess Antiasthmatic activity, Effect on cardiovascular system, Antidiabetic activity, Hypochoesterolaemic activity, Antioxidant activity, Analgesic activity, Anti-inflammatory activity, Immunomodulatory activity, Anti-cancer activity, Anti-depressant activity, Antiulcer activity, Effect on Reproductive system and hepato protective activity.
