Botanical Description:  A large decicious shrub; leaves opposite, glabrous, minutely pellucid-punctuate, shining above, bright green beneath; flowers scarlet red or sometimes yellow, mostly solitary sometimes 2-4 together, stamens very numerous inserted on the calyx below the petals at various levels; fruits globose, crowned by persistent calyx, rind coriaceous and woody, interior septate with membranous walls containing numerous seeds, seeds angular with red, pink and whitish fleshy testa. Flowering and fruiting major part of the year,

It is cultivated throughout India.

Modern Pharmacological Action: P. granatum is rich in antioxidant of polyphenolic class which includes tannins & flavonoids. Antioxidant activity has been proposed to play a vital role in various pharmacological activities such as anti‐aging, anti‐inflammatory, anti atherosclerosis and anti activities. Inhibition of free radical induced damage by supplementation of antioxidants has become an attractive therapeutic strategy for reducing the risk of diseases.
