Terminalia chebula Retz.

Botanical Description:  A moderate sized, deciduous tree. Leaves simple, ovate, elliptic or obovate, glabrous to tawny-villous beneath with a pair of large glands at the top of the petiole; flowers yellowish white in terminal simple spikes, fruits glabrous, shining ellipsoidal, obovoid or ovoid drupes; yellow to orange brown in colour, faintly angled, uptp 3.75 cm long; seeds hard, pale yellow. Flowering and fruiting from March to December.

Ayurvedic Properties and Uses:

  • Rasa : Madhura, amla, Katu, Tikta, Kasaya
  • Guna : Laghu, Ruksa
  • Virya : Usna
  • Vipaka : Madhura
  • Karma : Caksusya, Dipana, Hryda, Medhya, sarvadosaprasamana, Rasayana, Anulomana.

Modern Pharmacological Action:  The fruit pericarp showed cytoprotective avtivity, cardiotonic activity, antimutagenic activity and antifungal properties. It is also known to possess anti ulcer activity. It is purgative (sennoside A and anthraquinone glycoside), astringent (tannin), alterative, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, anodyne, stomachic, antibilious, alterative cardio tonic, antiseptic, anti pyretic, antiemetic and digestive. It also tends to possess antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial, antistress, antispasmodic, anti hepatitis B virus activity, anthelmintic and purgative.
